Webcity Since 1997, Webcity has been providing hosting and related Internet services. In that time, they have grown to become one of Australia’s leading hosting and services providers. They are also one of the country’s leading domain registrars, having served over 150,000 customers since their inception. Other services include online storage – starting at under $20.00 per year – professional web design and more. The company’s services were designed with the small to medium -sized business in mind.

Webcity offers both shared and private servers through four different packages. The EasySite starts at under $4.00 per month with a three year contract but includes very little. While you get unlimited web traffic (bandwidth), it is going to be hard to present a lot of attractive content in just 1 GB of disk space! You also get only a single e-mail address. Of course, e-mail addresses are easy to find almost anywhere but, equally obvious, webmasters would prefer their e-mails to contain their site address. Not only is this more professional, it makes perfect sense from a marketing and promotional angle. Many contacts are likely to wonder about a webmaster or business that uses a free e-mail service for its correspondence as opposed to one linking to their site. EasySite also includes spam and virus filtering and easy sitebuilder.

The Cloud Starter package also has unlimited bandwidth but comes with 50 GB disk space, five e-mail accounts, spam and virus filtering, and PERL 7, PHP, and MySQL support. It also boasts 99.5% uptime and uses Lite Speed Web Server technology. While an obvious improvement over the EasySite package, at just under $8.00 per month for one year, it is not a very good deal financially. The price drops to $5.95 a month with a three year contract, which is the same amount EasySite users pay under a one year contract.

The Cloud Pro package is comparable to many other hosting providers’ offerings though certainly more expensive. With unlimited bandwidth, disk space, and e-mail, as well as support for the programming languages and features mentioned above, it is a good package but it is a bit overpriced. With a three year contract, users pay right around $8.00 monthly. As with the previous tiers, that is the same amount that Cloud Starter users pay under a one year contract.

The Cloud Server EX is a private server package which includes a customizable firewall. Few will need this but it is competitively priced. Still, it is slightly more expensive than many similar plans from other networks.

Unfortunately, Webcity offers almost no features, extras, add-ons, or marketing and promotional support. It does provide at least some of these things at additional cost, though. As with some of the companies that are proud to be from one country or another, Australians may prefer paying a little extra to support a “home team” company. The customer support team, available 24 hours a day, is likewise based in Australia. Overall though, you should be able to find a better deal elsewhere both within the country and outside of it.
